How to change your Office product key by using a command-line script?

(Please note that the steps given here to change your office product key apply only to one-time purchases of Office 2013 and Office setup 2016. If you’re using some different version of Microsoft Office then contact the customer support team to get assistance on how to change the product key.)

Microsoft Office is one of the most used software among computer users. It can be downloaded on a single or multiple PCs, provided you have purchased the right subscription. If you have purchased multiple copies of MS Office and finding an error during activation of the same on different computer systems then this could be due the product key.

In other words, each Install button (you click to begin the installation process) is linked to a unique product key that can only be used for the installation of Office on a particular PC. If the activation fails due to the product key issue, you can fix it through the command-line script. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot the error:

  1. Visit the official website of Microsoft
  2. Log in to your Services & subscriptions page
    • Enter the registered email ID and password
  3. You will now see a list of the Office products linked to your Microsoft account
  4. Choose View product key under the first product listed on the web age
    • Note down the product key
  5. Repeat step four for all the remaining Office subscriptions, you have downloaded via office.com/setup
  6. Access the Command Prompt on the PC you are facing Microsoft activation error
  7. Now, do the following depending on the version of Windows installed on it:

Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

  • Open the Start menu, search for Command Prompt by typing the same in the search bar
  • Right-click the icon and choose Run as administrator

Windows 7

  • Hit the Start button and right-click Command Prompt icon
  • Choose Run as administrator
  1. Select your Office version from the drop-down menu
  2. Also, select the Windows version (32 or 64-bit)

For Office 2016 (32-bit Office and 32-bit Windows)

  • Paste the following command in the Command Prompt

cscript “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS” /dstatus

For Office 2013 (32-bit Office and 32-bit Windows)

  • Paste the following command in the Command Prompt

cscript “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS” /dstatus

  1. Try changing the product key with those you have written
  2. Hit Enter
  3. Now, open any of the Office applications and hit Next to proceed towards activation
  4. Select Next and repeat the same process for all PCs facing Office activation issue
